Etch Removal

Marble etching

Etching is often confused with staining.  Etching in fact appears lighter than the surrounding undamaged surface while staining typically appears darker.  Calcite based stones like marble, travertine, limestone and onyx are prone to etching.  Etching is caused when acidic foods or liquids such as citrus juice, soda's, vinegar and ketchup or acidic and caustic cleaners and chemicals such as bleach or toilet bowl cleaners come in contact with the minerals in the surfaces.  Some of these substances cause damage immediately upon contact while some might take longer.  It's also important to know that some varieties of calcium based stones vary in their susceptibility to etching as well

It is very important to note that sealers do not prevent etching as they are only meant to penetrate the surface and are designed to reduce penetration of oils and liquids and such.  Acidic substances and caustic chemicals need only come in contact with the minerals at the surface to cause etching.  In the end, the best, most cost effective way to prevent etching is to first understand what common foods, drinks or chemicals cause etching, and then of course being mindful about use and proper maintenance.

Kauai Scratch Removal can professionally remove etching and hone or polish the damaged area to blend with the surrounding surface.

There are protective films and high tech coatings on the market that are designed to prevent etching. We feel that the films add a plasticy look to the stone and we do not carry these films at this time. The best coatings have a natural appearance and work very well but are quite expensive.  We hope to offer the special coatings services very soon.
