Limestone is a sedimentary rock mostly made up of sedimentary stones, rocks and sand or ancient decomposed marine debris which is why fossils are often visible in many varieties of Limestone.  Along with a wide range of varieties also comes different grades of density and porosity with several very porous varieties close to around three times as porous as some marbles.

The porosity of some limestone's makes them susceptible to all types of staining as well as water intrusion which can lead to efflorescence, while the calcite content makes them sensitive to acids and caustic chemicals. This means limestone gets dirty, stained and etched, and in the cases of the softer varieties, scratched, spauled, and simply deteriorated.
