Onyx

Although it's for the most part as hard as most granite, Onyx is really in a league of its own with it's colors and translucent appearance. Onyx has been rising again in popularity as there are many architects and designers taking advantage of this translucent stone and installing it with backlighting, making them glow.

Onyx is formed in a similar way as travertine, for example, but under hotter conditions, usually near volcanic activity. Onyx is also acid sensitive and can be prone to issues with excessive moisture in certain environments. Another common characteristic of onyx is small voids in the stone although these are usually filled either at the quarry or during fabrication. Nonetheless it is still one of our favorite stones although not something we see too often.
