Slate

Slate is a very durable and very dense material that has been popular when it boomed a little over 100 years ago. Slate is also has very low permeability, meaning it barely absorbs water making it "waterproof" which is one reason why it is a popular and very durable roofing material.

Slate can last centuries if cared for properly, however, it is still prone to etching, water marks and things like scratching and in some environments, clefting which is when a layer or a portion of a layer separates from the stone.

It's also common for slate floors, for example, to have actual coatings applied to them as opposed to impregnating sealers. There are pro's and con's for either in different applications and environments. Preference on appearance sometimes dictates which is used as coatings can offer high gloss sheens whereas sealers allow breathability. In the case of coatings, at some point in time they will need to be stripped off in order to remove damage and dirt buildup or to perform most restoration processes.

Kauai Scratch Removal can restore and revive your slate surfaces.
